Homeopathy is a medical system developed in the late 1700’s by the German Physician Samuel Hahnemann. Homeopathy is based on the belief that the body can help heal itself by using remedies made from natural substances in small amounts. It is based on the theory of “like treats like, ” meaning someone can be cured using the same substance that will produce the symptoms they are having. It also means to use as minimum a dose as possible for the treatment, therefore the remedy should be diluted as much as possible.
A great example of how homeopathy is made and works are Poison Ivy/Oak. The remedy for poison ivy/poison oak/poison sumac is called Rhus Tox, which is short for Rhus Toxicodendron. Toxicodendron is the botanical name for poison oaks and poison ivy. Rhus is the botanical name for poison sumac.
Rhus Tox is made by placing a drop of the plants into a vial of water, it is then shaken many times and then a drop of that is placed into another vial of water and shaken. The process is repeated 10, 50, 100, and 1,000… times to make different strengths. The more it has been diluted the stronger the remedy. The remedy is then put into a sugar pellet or a bottle with a mixture of water and alcohol. The remedy is taken by mouth.
Let’s say you come in contact with poison ivy and it starts to spread. You would then start taking the remedy under the tongue. When you start the remedy it is putting the signal of the poison ivy/poison oak/poison sumac into your body. The poison ivy/oak/sumac that is trying to spread sees that and stops spreading.
Many homeopathic remedies may also be used for other conditions. In staying with the example of Rhus tox, this remedy may also treat headaches, restless legs, joint pain, fever, and more.
Unlike herbs which work like medications, Homeopathy is safe and does not interfere with any medications or herbal supplements.
